This Week
We have looked at long vowel sounds in phonics-recapping some and learning others. The long vowel sounds in Phase 3 are oo, ee, ai, igh, oa. We have been sorting words with them in and spotting them in our reading, so that we don’t always sound out the individual letters now but look for any patterns first. We have also been thinking about other ways we can use to read, apart from phonics, such as thinking what the next word might be to make sense and looking at the pictures to help.
In maths, we have been looking at doubling and halving, and ordering and writing the digits to 20.
As our topic is growth and changes, we have been reading the hungry caterpillar in small groups. We also have talked about minibeasts and enjoyed a minibeast hunt on the field.
This term, we are beginning to structure the children’s maths and literacy learning a little more so that they experience adult-led learning in a group in each area over the course of the week, and they are also being encouraged to challenge themselves more by completing specific independent learning tasks in their child directed time. This is to prepare them for the Key Stage One curriculum in Year One.

If you would like to do a minibeast hunt in your garden or local area over the weekend, I have attached the sheet we used on Friday. Please share on Tapestry or by bringing in the sheet if you do decide to have a go. Have fun!
Next week
We will look at er, ur, ar and or in phonics, and begin to record addition and subtraction using a number track.
- I will be out of school on Wednesday afternoon at a county moderation meeting. The class will be covered by Mrs Warrener and Mrs Young.
- You should have received a letter about our trip to the British Wildlife Centre on Tuesday 4th June. Please return permission slips and money as soon as possible. If you are able to help on this trip, please let me know. You will need a current DBS check from St Johns School (they are not transferable-sorry)
- Friday 10th May is a non-uniform day for £1 in aid of charity (please see Mrs Cooper’s email). There will also be a cake sale after school.
- Please can all children have a full, fresh water bottle in school each day as the weather is getting warmer. Thanks.
Milk Reminder
If your child is now 5 and still wishes to have milk at school, you do need to pay for it, as milk is only provided by the government to 4 year olds. Please register and pay at:https://www.coolmilk.com . Please let me know when you have done so, so I can make sure they are getting it each day. We do have lots of 5 year olds in the class who are asking for milk, but as we haven’t heard from parents that they have paid, it can be quite sad for them when we have to say no!
