A weekly newsletter will be published here on a Friday afternoon.

This will provide information of our learning intentions each week, as well as providing essential reminders of what is happening in class.

Home Learning Objectives

  • Daily reading (no specific time, but daily, little and often). We expect the children to read a minimum of 3 times a week.
  • Year 1 High Frequency Words – to initially read individually, then in context.
  • Topic work done or researched at home (optional) is shared within the class.
  • Maths Activity / game
  • Suggested web sites which have optional homework tasks to cover literacy and numeracy to consolidate work undertaken in class.

Dear parents:

Maths:
This week, we have been practicing adding two numbers together. To help us visualize this, we used part-part-whole models to see how two smaller “parts” come together to make the “whole” (altogether) number.
We have also been learning to write number sentences to match our models (for example: 3 + 4 = 7).
Home learning idea:
If you would like to support your  child’s understanding of addition you could try this dice game that we have played in school-
  1. Roll a dice and ask your child to show that number using objects (like buttons, pennies, or Lego cubes). This is the first part.
  2. Roll the dice again and have them show the second number using different objects. This is the second part.
  3. Ask the big question:”How many do we have altogether?” Encourage them to count them all up to find the whole.
  4. Write it down: See if your child can write out the matching addition number sentence on a piece of paper.
English: 
This week, we have been working hard on writing our very own penguin fact files. We are learning how to organise our writing using headings so that information is easy to read.
To build our fact files, we have been researching and answering three key questions:
  • What do penguins eat?
  • How do they move?
  • What do they look like?

Phonics:

This week, we have been learning a very exciting sound: the split digraph ‘a_e’.
We have been learning that the silent or ‘magic’ e is friends with the letter a. Even though they are split up by another letter, they work together to make the long “ay” sound (like in the words cake, snake, and game).
