Swimming
Swimming is part of the National Curriculum. At St John’s, the children in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 have swimming lessons at Freedom Leisure Centre with swimming instructors tailoring the lessons to meet their needs. We aim to provide the children with the best opportunity to meet the National Curriculum expectations as follows:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
At the end of Key Stage 2, we report on the PE and Sports Premium Report the percentage of children who meet the expectations stated above.
The school has proved to excel at delivering high quality P.E and opportunities for all.
Wehave excellent linksa with lots of community and local sports clubs and raise standards of P.E by offering a range of sporting opportunities through the below levels of competition:
- Intra-school (Level 1) – sporting competition for all students in school through intra-school competition e.g. house competitions and sports day.
- Inter-schools in local inter-school competitions (Level 2) – the wide range of sporting events we offer within the Beacon cluster of primary schools and the next rounds afterwards for the North Wealden Finals.
- School Games Festivals/County Finals (Level 3) – Active Sussex will stage multi-sport School Games Festivals or a Regional Final as a culmination of year-round school sport competition e.g. School Games, Sussex Final for Sportshall Athletics or Cross-Country.

School Games Mark
We are delighted to announce that St John’s have again achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2024/25 academic year.
The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.
We have had lots of sporting success this year, including representing North Wealden in the County Finals for Sportshall Athletics, Cricket, Netball and Tri-Golf.
We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible.
As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.
