Pupil Voice
At St John’s, we believe that everyone’s voice should be heard. We actively encourage the children to be involved in this and have an active School Council where children can voice any concerns or requests. We have regular Pupil Voice audits for our children to voice their opinions on school life and where we can improve. Each class has access to a ‘Worry Box’ so that children can privately raise any concerns. Staff check these regularly and discuss any issues so our children feel they have a voice in our community and feel safe, happy and secure in our school environment.
House Captains and School Council
St John’s has four Houses: St Christopher, St Nicholas, St Francis and St Anthony. Each child is allocated to a house when they join the school. The children in Year 6 write speeches to apply for the role of House Captain and are elected in a whole school vote. Our House Captains also lead House assemblies and meetings throughout the year, and represent the school in lots of other different ways.
Children can earn house points in school for things like good work, showing school values and kind behaviour. Houses are also a huge part of sports around the school – the children compete for their house in all our inter-school competitions such as cross country, netball, swimming and sports day at the end of each year.
Our House Captains also form our School Council. We hold regular meetings where priorities for the term/year are decided and any issues brought up in House meetings are discussed. Suggestions include things like requests for new clubs, new ideas for how to look after and improve our school, and everyone in it, or any worries or concerns their house may have raised. This past year we have focussed on playtimes including play leaders and equipment.
Digital Leaders
The Digital Leaders team at St John’s includes those children with a passion for technology, who want to share their knowledge with others and promote the safe use of all things digital throughout the school. Being a Digital Leader is a fantastic opportunity to take on responsibility, learn new skills, develop and demonstrate leadership skills. Their role is to support the use of technology across the school. They do a variety of jobs including:
- Support the use of iPads and computers in school to support learning
- Share their skills and expertise with other pupils, classes and teachers
- Assist teachers and other pupils in understanding coding applications
- Set up equipment in classrooms for teachers
- Support teachers in using technology in the classroom
- Have a good understanding of how to stay safe with technology and share that with others
- Attend a weekly Digital Leaders club to extend their knowledge and skills
