Reception Newsletter 27.09.2018
This week
We have introduced a little more structure to our learning by starting our morning activity carousel this week. The children now come in and find their picture and then complete the activity assigned to them. We follow that with a whole class phonics session at 9am for about 15 minutes. This week we have been playing rhyming games and thinking about the sound at the start of our names to get the children used to listening in a large group before we move on to teaching any individual letters. After playtime, we have a story and then a 10 minutes maths input. This week we have been counting to 20. The afternoon is then more self-selecting activities for the children.
We have been to celebration assembly again this week and will go to Mr Pollard’s Tuesday assembly next week.
I have now finished assessing the children to see their starting points in a range of areas and we will start to focus the learning activities on the children’s needs in small groups or individually. We can discuss where your children are, and their next steps, at parents evening in a few weeks’ time.
Thank you for your support in encouraging the children to come in by themselves. It makes a calmer start in the classroom for them to begin their learning and starts off their independence at school. If you have a message, please let Mrs Warrener on the gate know, or please feel free to email me the previous evening or that morning-I look at my emails as the first job when I come in to school for the day, even if I don’t get time to reply straightaway.
Star of the day
At the end of each day, we choose someone who has done something to make us proud to be the Star of the Day for the next day. This can be in terms of learning, behaviour, kindness, resilience-all kinds of things! That child then gets to lead the line out for home time and do lots of special jobs the next day. They also get to wear a badge and have their picture displayed in the classroom. It is a way of recognising the wide range of positive behaviours we are trying to encourage at school. Across the year, each child will get a turn to be the Star of the Day.
Library
Please remember to return the library books on a Monday. All school library books should have a St Johns stamp in them and we have a list of the books the children chose. If your child is not in school on a Monday afternoon, they will go to the library on another morning this week, depending on when we have an extra adult in the classroom.
Next week
We will be thinking more about rhyming words, so if you are able read a rhyming book with your child and play some rhyming games this weekend, it would be really supportive. Also, playing “I spy” would support their learning on initial sounds.
