Reception Newsletter 21.06.19
This week
We have been looking at the final few phonic patterns in Phase 3- ear and air-and practising reading words and sentences with these sounds in. We have been encouraging the children to have a look around them, in books, on signs in shops and on menus etc. to realise how many words they can read now and work out by themselves! We have also been talking about how you can work out words without knowing all the sounds sometimes-by looking at the picture clues, thinking about what would make sense and having a good guess by looking at the first letter and thinking about what the word could be.
In maths, we have been enjoying measuring. We measured and compared our feet and some children even measured their whole bodies! We have talked about time as a measure and thought about the order of our day, including what time we do certain things such as wake up and go to bed.

If you have time, you could talk about the times of the day as you go this weekend, or practise the days of the week to build on the maths learning we have done.
Transition
A few people have mentioned to us recently that they are seeing changes in their child’s behaviour at home, and I thought it was worth mentioning that this time of year can be quite tricky for some children as they begin to understand that there will be some changes as they leave one class to join another. This is especially evident for Reception children, as we have been out to visit new children and the new children have been in looking at the classroom. Not all children are affected by this, and some seem to breeze through change, but just like adults, some children’s worries can manifest in certain ways without them necessarily being able to vocalise their thoughts and feelings. The best we can do for them is to keep everything very steady and to routine as much as we can and explain any differences with them and in time for them to process it. Please be assured that we believe all the children are well prepared for the move to Year One and we do a lot “behind the scenes” as a school team to make sure any transition times are positive for them. Do not hesitate to come and chat to us if you would like any more information or support on this.
