Reception Newsletter 15.11.2019
This week
On Monday, we were thinking about Remembrance Day and we watched a short CBeebies poppy animation to help the children understand why people are wearing poppies at this time of year. I hope they could explain something they had remembered as they shared their iced biscuits with you. We started a dance topic in PE and for science we thought about the differences between night and day, including nocturnal animals.
In phonics, we have covered new letter c ( we decided not to cover so many new letters this week and reinforce word reading and writing instead) and have played lots of games reinforcing blending and segmenting. The children have all been practising their names using the correct letter formation.
In maths, we have been looking at different representations of numbers, including comparing and ordering.
If you would like to support your child this week, you could play the pairs game at this website:
http://www.letters-and-sounds.com/phase-2-initial-sound-game-1.html (you will need Flash Player) enabled
or this maths one:
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/ladybird-spots (Start with 1 to 5, but if your feel your child could move on, choose any further activities to match their level of learning)
Next week
We will cover k, ck, e and u in phonics, and in maths we will be thinking about one more and one less. We will be looking at Celebrations of light, starting with Diwali and the children will start to make a clay Diva lamp.
I will be out of the classroom on Wednesday morning as I am at a choir event called “The Big Sing” in Tunbridge Wells. I will also be out on Friday morning visiting another school to share good practice in phonics teaching. The class will be covered by Mrs Shirley Playford-a very experienced Reception teacher who has covered for my class at St Johns before. I am sorry that these two things have happened in the same week, but the children coped brilliantly on Thursday and as usual wonderful Mrs Warrener will be here as continuity for the class.
