Reception Newsletter 10.01.20
Firstly, we want to say a big thank you for the generous Christmas gifts you gave us at the end of term and for the presents and cards from the class as a whole. I hope we have managed to thank you individually already, but this is just another chance to say how touched and grateful we were.
This week
The children have settled back into school life really well and it is good to see them refreshed after Christmas and ready to learn! It sounds like you all had a lovely Christmas break. Thank you to those families who uploaded some pictures on Tapestry-the children have enjoyed sharing these with the class.
We have started to look at Phase 3 phonics and have covered j,v and w this week. Here is the Phase 3 framework if you would like to see what letter patterns are covered this term:

This phase is when the children encounter names of letters as well as sounds, so we have been singing the alphabet song, and they also begin to look at the capital letter formation.
Please continue to support your child by reading with them at least 3 times a week (everyday for 5 minutes is best if you can), and writing down what you have done in their yellow reading record. It only needs to be one or two pages and a chat about the text to really support their learning in school. There is often a huge gap at the end of the Reception year between those children who have had this regular support at home and those who haven’t and we do rely on your input to reinforce what has been taught at school. In maths, we have been thinking about ordering numbers 1-20 and have been doing simple calculations using one more and one less.
We did a snowflake dance in PE and have been thinking about the Arctic and Anctartica; where they are on the globe and map and which animals might live there and why.
Library
We have started borrowing books from the school library again this week. Please remember to return the books each Wednesday to be changed.
Next week
We will look at x, y, and x and continue to practise reading tricky words. We will continue to focus on one more and one less up to 20 and will look in more detail at polar animals.
Notices
- Please ensure EVERYTHING that your child has at school is named please, especially new Christmas presents such as water bottles, hats, gloves or lunchboxes. We will be continuing to encourage the children to use the outside area, so please make sure they have an appropriate warm and waterproof coat each day.
- We will be visiting Pizza Express on Thursday 13th Feb to enhance our topic of Around the World. More details to follow on a separate email next week.
- I would like to start “Share a story” sessions at the end of the day this term, as it worked really well last year. This is where a parent comes in to read a story to the class. It can be one that fits in with our topic, maybe one in another language, or just any story special to you. If you would like to do this, we can set aside any day at 2.50, so just let me know when you are available. Thank you.
