English
We give our children plenty of opportunities to excel in every aspect of the English curriculum, be it reading widely, writing for a real audience or speaking and listening with a variety of different individuals. We focus on increasing the children’s vocabulary across all subject areas and learning to read (initially through phonics – we use the ‘Twinkl’ phonics scheme in Key stage 1 ) and develop a love of reading. In Key Stage 2, we use the Accelerated Reader programme to help develop our children into lifelong readers. Children are given lots of opportunites to write across the curriculum and with freedom and creativity. In KS1, children are taught phonics and English daily, with this transitioning into reading skills and English lessons (including writing, spelling and grammar skills) in KS2. The children at St John’s are exposed to a wide range of quality texts throughout their English lessons each year. Reviews of the English Curriculum take place regularly, however we retain the points in which we are strong and build upon them.
