Music is a big part of life at St John’s

We have a large choir that meets each week and the whole school enjoys singing in assembly and across the curriculum.

We offer woodwind, string, guitar and piano/keyboard tuition provided by our East Sussex Music service: “Create Music” and many children also go to Area Music Centre activities or Summer schools. We also offer the chance to be part of a band with our “iRock” sessions.

Each child in Key Stage Two has a 45 minute lesson of curriculum music delivered by a specialist teacher every week, with children in EYFS and KS1 receiving a 45 minute lesson delivered by their class teacher in our well resourced music room. We follow the “Charanga” scheme for music teaching.  There is also a dedicated music assembly for 20 minutes each week for the whole school. We have a well structured programme of listening music that runs across the year in every class.  Children are also encouraged to take part in the many performance occasions, such as the Christmas Carol Service, Nativity and the Easter presentation. In the past few years, we have participated in many community events such as the Crowborough Civic Carol service, the Big Sing and Voice in a Million at Wembley.

Children are given opportunities to watch and listen to live music across the year with demonstrations from our visiting instrumental teachers, mini concerts and workshops, such as African drumming. Year 6 are lucky enough to be going to Glyndebourne in the Autumn to watch an opera!
