Suggested learning for week beg 23.03.2020 and 30.03.2020

Phonics (20 minutes each day)

Choose any of these activities-you can repeat them on different days:

Non digital activities

  • Recap all the Phase 2 and 3 sounds using the phonics mats (given out at parents eve/on Tapestry and website uploads) and ask your child to show you the actions (a document outlining these is uploaded on Tapestry and the website). Think of a word beginning with each one or find something around the house that has the sound in.
  • Write out the tricky words, hide them and your child has to find the one in the house that you ask them to.
  • Dictate 5 words to your child that have the long vowel sounds in and they have to write them down-they can write them on and with anything! E.g. moon, feet, light, coat, pain, look. Use CVC words e.g cat pot sit if that suits your child better. Ask them to make up some for you too. Will you get them all right?!

Digital resources

Start on Phase 2 and if your child seems very competent, then use Phase 3 and click on any of the long vowels (ai ee igh oa oo) at the bottom

  • Use www.phonicsplay.co.uk for reading tricky word trucks. Choose whichever Phase your child is on from their yellow reading record.
  • www.phonicsplay.co.uk Pick a Picture game Phase 2 or 3 (digraphs covers a few patterns we haven’t learnt yet but some children will manage this)
  • Spend some time on the “Teach your monster to read” website. (Each child has their own login-this is uploaded on Tapestry documents) twww.teachyourmonstertoread.com

Reading

  • Spend 15 minutes reading to your child each day. Pause to talk about the story and question your child about what has happened and what they think will happen next. At the end, ask them if it ended in the way they thought. What would they draw or write if there was another page added to the story? Talk about your favourite page and ask them what they enjoyed or whether there was anything they didn’t like. If you do not have a great supply of books at home, the Cbeebies bedtime stories are always good quality texts and many are available on the iplayer.
  • Complete 10 minutes reading of the school reading books as normal and continue to write in the yellow record books. Don’t forget the tricky words are at the back, so please continue to work through those.

Fine motor skills

Spend 15 minutes on one of these activities each day:

  • Cutting with scissors (there are loads of resources for this on Twinkl or even anywhere on the internet) or you could cut out pictures from magazines
  • Building with small construction toys e.g Lego, sticklebricks, Magnets, marble run
  • Playdoh (recipe for home made playdoh is on Tapestry)-make different shapes and use the playdoh in different ways e.g. rolling, squashing, squeezing
  • Practise doing up buttons and zips on lots of different clothes around the house
  • Colouring neatly and carefully, choosing appropriate colours for the picture
  • Threading beads or pasta tubes onto string

Being physical

Spend 60 minutes a day (doesn’t have to be all in one go) moving if you can! This could be in your garden if you are lucky enough to have one, using a ball, going on the trampoline, making an obstacle course. Or using some of these websites to stimulate activity indoors:

Or….Time yourself to see how many of these different things you can do in 30 seconds?

  • Star jumps
  • Bunny hops
  • Touch your toes
  • Hops
  • Knee rises

Maths (15 minutes)

  • Practice counting to 20, 30, 50 then 100 if you can!
  • Can you find 10 red things around your house?
  • Find 10 of the same thing-it might be pasta shapes, Lego bricks, counters, buttons. How many ways can you split them into two piles? Count how many in each and say the calculation that makes 10. If you can, you could write it down too!
  • Practise writing your digits to 10 and beyond!
  • Throw 2 dice or look at some dominoes. Can you count the spots altogether? Which patterns make 10?

Writing 10 minutes

  • Practise writing your name. Can you learn to write your surname?
  • Practise your letter formation
  • Write a sentence about something you can see outside one of the windows in your house (encourage your child to use phonics to sound out the words-they don’t have to get the spellings correct)

Unstructured learning ( 2 hours)

Here are some ideas for the other times, based on what we usually have available in the classroom;

  • Dressing up-you could dress up in someone else’s clothes if you don’t have any special dressing up clothes-or wear your clothes back to front!
  • Building/construction toys e.g Lego
  • Small world play e.g dolls, kitchens, garages, farms, train tracks etc
  • Junk modelling
  • Colouring and drawing
  • Free writing-letters to elderly relatives or their friends would be nice or just to their toys or book characters etc..
  • Messy play-water/sand/paint/flour etc
  • Singing, dancing, playing musical instruments
