This Wednesday at St John’s we celebrated World Book Day, the children all looked wonderful in their costumes. They enjoyed lots of story telling and story related activities. During the afternoon all teachers taught in character and the children moved amongst the classes sharing books and taking part in book related activities. All week in reception we have been reading the Supertato books. We have been drawing and writing about the characters and on Tuesday the children found themselves in the midst of a mystery to be solved when carrot went missing. So on Wednesday I was of course dressed as Supertato and Mrs Warrener was Evil Pea (armed with a potato masher!) We had lots of fun.

In phonics we leant two new sounds, ‘ear’ (beard, shears, fear) and ‘air’ (chair, pair, fair). The flashcards for these have gone home in book bags. At this point in the year we check and change all books on a Monday and a Friday, please do listen to your child read regularly and record it in the reading record record book when you do. In maths we have been combining numbers within 10 to find out how many altogether. As well as lots of conceptual subitising to identify a whole quantity within 10 by subitising the smaller groups that make up that number. We had our second gymnastics lesson and everyone was very excited to have a go on some of the equipment. The children travelled along the benches and over the tables, pausing to hold the balances, they did very well.

Thank you to everyone who attended parents evening this week, it was extremely beneficial at this point in the year to be able to discuss each child’s next steps as we move through the second half of their reception year.
