This week in phonics we have been reading and writing words with 3 letter adjacent adjectives, it’s really hard to hear all the sounds you need to spell long words like ‘splash’ ‘trunks’ and ‘sports’ the children did brilliantly. We have lots of tricky words now and we practise these daily. We won’t be learning any more new ones this year now, but we do need to spend more time embedding our level 4 ones. I have sent home today a ‘tricky word mat’ which shows all the tricky words taught so far. Perhaps you could stick it on the fridge and practise them over the summer? Remember, tricky words are trying to trick us, we can’t use the sounds we know to decode them, we just have to know them.
In maths we have been exploring maps. We have looked at different kinds of maps, used google earth to zoom into Crowborough and find our school, as well as identifying other well known places like Goldsmiths and Lidls! We saw roads and buildings and green spaces, we thought about how a map of a place looks different to the pictures and why that is. We followed a map on the playground to find treasure. The children then had a go at making their own maps, we mapped our routes to school and drew ariel maps of our bedrooms. It was lots of fun and the children really embraced it.
In P.E we played games on the playground, such as sharks and fishes, helping us to grow our understanding of attack and defence, as well as why games have rules and why we need to follow them.
Next week looks like it’s going to be another warm one. Please remember to send in a water bottle and a sun hat for your child and apply sun cream in the morning before school. We are blessed with lots of shade on the field and we will be making full use of it!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Jo Bentley
